Dear Diary,
It is Day 3 of my CELTA experience in Playa Kamala, Ecuador. Yesterday, I woke around 8am and ran on the beach. I did some yoga stretches on the beach after my run, and then went to breakfast. Darwin, our cook, was making French toast and eggs, which I enjoyed with my fruit, fruit juice, and coffee. I took a shower with good water pressure and hot water, did my hair and make-up, and went to class at noon. Lunch was served at 2pm, and class resumed at 3:30.
I taught my first lesson last night. Our learners are intermediate level. We have five teachers on our team, and we tag-teamed the class, each teaching for 20 minutes, and I was last. I enjoyed the experience. The students were engaged and enjoyed the activities that we gave them. Our trainer had positive feedback and thought that we had a lovely rapport with the students and that our first class went very well. I need to work on standing more towards the back of the room, so that every student can see me and feel included.
Class ended at 7:30pm. I took the minutes for our de-briefing meeting, as my job here is secretary, and we went to supper at 8.
Time passes quickly and yet yesterday feels like it was weeks ago. We are always busy with learning and homework. The first week is the easiest week, so it will get more intense from here. Some of the other student-teachers were surprised that an intensive teacher-training course was my “vacation.” Many of them have been traveling already for a week, or they plan to stay in South America to live and teach once they finish the course. So far, it doesn’t feel much like vacation, but I enjoy a good challenge, and have yet to explore the nearby party town of Montanita.
Good night,
Rebecca
I enjoyed your latest blog. I am happy to hear you are doing so well. Did you volunteer to be secretary or did they know you are really good at that sort of thing? Glad you like your group.
ReplyDeleteAre there any other runners who run on the beach? You have not mentioned the weather. Is it very hot or not?
Last hight Harry, Will, and I ate out at Cantinflas. Did you know they moved down the street? We ate outside on the porch. It was my birthday night out with Will. He is going to do some things in our yard for my presents. New plantings coming up.
Have you seen any critters yet?
Do you take mace when you run alone on the beach?
I bet the students like you. I'm interested in what sort of things you teach them in English.
Gotta run. Onward to Plain...testing time. Ugh! It's ok, really.
Love you tons,
Mom
