I'm moving to South America: FAQs

When are you leaving?
Jan 3, 2011

Where are you going?
Montevideo, Uruguay

Is it for missions?
I'm not going with an organization, but I hope to get involved with a church once I get settled.  If you'd like to, please pray that God would give me opportunities to share the Gospel and to serve Him in Uruguay.

What are you going to do?
Last spring I was certified to teach English as a foreign language, and I hope to get a job in March teaching English in Montevideo.  I'll spend January and February backpacking in Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and brushing up my Spanish.

Do you speak Spanish?
I speak broken functional Spanish.  I hope to learn it.

Do you know anyone down there?
I met a missionary in Greenville who put me in touch with some of his contacts in Montevideo.  I'll see some friends in Peru in February.

What are going to do with your house?
I have a friend who is moving back to Greenville from NYC, and she and her family will rent my house for a year or so.

What about your dog?
Lola is going to live with her new foster parents, friends of mine from United Ministries.

What about that guy you were dating?
What guy?

Are you going to salsa down there?
Montevideo does have some salsa, but their popular dance is Argentine Tango, which I look forward to learning.

Is it hot there?
Montevideo is the same distance from the equator as Greenville, so the seasons are the same, just reversed.  It will be summer when I go in January.

Is it safe?
Uruguay is the safest country in South America.  There's very little violent crime in Montevideo.  The most prevalent crime is pickpocketing, and the children are highly skilled at it.

How long will you be there?
A year or so

What if you meet someone and get married and end up staying?
That's not my plan.

What if you can't find a job or hate it there?
Plan B:  My friend in Vietnam says that he'll have me a teaching job, apartment, and moped within one week of my arrival.
Plan C:  grad school
Plan D:  Help my brother start a theatre company in southern Greenville County.

Are you excited?
Yes.

Are you scared?
Yes.

If a movie were made about your life, which actress would play you?
Rachel McAdams

What song would play in the scene where you're flying from Greenville to Montevideo?
Astair by Matt Costa (see youtube link below)

What song would play in the montage scene where you're "getting settled" in Montevideo:  finding the apartment, interviewing for the job, trying to speak Spanish and feeling retarded, etc.?
Animal Arithmetic by Jonsi (see youtube link below)

What's the best way to keep in touch with you?
Facebook, Skype

Can I come visit you?
Absolutely!
